Hertfordshire
Middleton Cup Team led by IPP Peter McNulty travelled to Newmarket Avenue BC
to commence their 2011 campaign. |
A full squad of 30
players and a small band of supporters gathered at the Cambridgeshire club
to cheer on the Hertfordshire team. |
Hertfordshire made
a slow start to the match dropping shots across the board on the first end.
The second end saw only 1 rink score |
and Cambridgeshire at this stage
were 15 shots up. By the 3rd end the deficit was 21 shots and by the 4th end
Cambridgeshire led by |
29 shots. The rink led by Jerry
Rumball were in trouble at 4 ends and were 13 shots behind to Richard
Catton's rink without score and |
the rink led by Andrew Briden were
10 shots down at 4 ends without scoring. Not the best of starts for the new
Hertfordshire team but to |
a man they stuck to the task. By
the half way stage Hertfordshire had reduced the Cambridgeshire lead to 12
shots. Hertfordshire |
managed to get ahead by 1 shot at
the 14th end and looked like they had Cambridgeshire on the back foot. |
At the 19th end Hertfordshire were
leading on 5 rinks and looked like they were heading for a 20-2 points
victory but Cambridgeshire |
had other ideas. Cambridgeshire
skip Steve Jacobs was 2 behind playing the last end against Hertfordshire
skip Andrew Briden and |
looked set to lose the points
having been 12 up at 9 ends. Steve had other ideas and managed to score 2
shots to level the score and |
share the rink points. |
Hertfordshire rink skipped by Mark
Yelland were 2 up playing the last end but suffered a 4 shot score against
them on the last end to |
drop 2 points to the
Cambridgeshire rink skipped by Mark Law. The rink skipped by Jerry Rumball
clawed their way through the match |
to reduce the deficit on the rink
to just 9 shots and were last to finish but the match was already over for
Cambridgeshire. |

Cambridgeshire President Tony
Taylor congratulated the Hertfordshire team sponsor Peter McNulty on their
victory |
during the post match meal. Peter
in his usual manner congratulated Tom Muir Harpenden on his first Middleton
Cup |
match and presented Alan Hutchison
Bishops Stortford with his county badge on his first match representing
Hertfordshire in the Middleton
Cup. |
Peter continued to amuse those
present with his fines system and the manner in which he thanked the

Avenue club for the facilities and
the ladies for a very welcome post match meal which was a credit to all
concerned. |
